What is an IOL?<\/h2>\n
An intraocular lens implant (IOL) is a synthetic lens that is used to replace the natural lens of the eye during cataract surgery or refractive lens exchange. The purpose of the eye\u2019s lens is to focus light onto the retina, producing clear images. When this lens has become clouded by cataracts, replacing it with an artificial IOL restores clear vision. In patients who do not have cataracts, a similar procedure called refractive lens exchange (RLE) may be performed to help improve refractive errors.1<\/sup><\/p>\n During cataract surgery, a standard IOL may be used to replace the eye\u2019s natural lens, reversing the effects of cataracts and often improving distance vision.
