Our goal at Davis Eye Center is to help each of our patients achieve their best vision possible. We are pleased to offer a range of advanced technology intraocular lens implant (ATIOL) options for our patients who wish to reduce their dependence on glasses or contacts following cataract surgery or refractive lens exchange (RLE).

An intraocular lens implant (IOL) is a synthetic lens that is used to replace the natural lens of the eye during cataract surgery or refractive lens exchange. The purpose of the eye’s lens is to focus light onto the retina, producing clear images. When this lens has become clouded by cataracts, replacing it with an artificial IOL restores clear vision. In patients who do not have cataracts, a similar procedure called refractive lens exchange (RLE) may be performed to help improve refractive errors.1

During cataract surgery, a standard IOL may be used to replace the eye’s natural lens, reversing the effects of cataracts and often improving distance vision. Some patients who receive standard IOLs may still need to use glasses or contacts to treat astigmatism or for reading or other up-close tasks.

For patients who wish to reduce or even eliminate their need for corrective lenses, we at Davis Eye Center offer a number of advanced technology IOL (ATIOL) options that can help them achieve better vision at a range of distances. While ATIOLs may not be covered by patients’ medical insurance plans, most patients who opt for these premium lenses feel that the added expense is worthwhile.

Types of ATIOLs we offer at Davis Eye Center include:

Toric IOLs are designed to correct astigmatism, a refractive error caused by an uneven curvature of the cornea. We feature the AcrySofⓇ IQ Toric IOL, which eliminates the distortion caused by astigmatism and helps to sharpen patients’ vision.

Beginning at around age 40, everyone begins to be affected by age-related near vision loss, known as presbyopia. People with presbyopia often rely on reading glasses or bifocals to see clearly when performing up-close vision tasks, like reading or checking their phones. Fortunately, we offer a number of ATIOLs that are specifically designed to correct vision at all ranges and can help patients with presbyopia reduce their dependence on corrective lenses.

For our patients with presbyopia, we are pleased to offer the first and only trifocal IOL in the United States, the AcrySofⓇ PanOptix Trifocal IOL. This lens improves vision at all distances and is especially well-suited for our patients who have active lifestyles. For our patients with astigmatism, we recommend the PanOptix Toric IOL, which can help clear distortion and improve distance vision.2

The best way to find out which type of IOL will best meet your needs is to consult with an ophthalmologist you trust. When you meet with Dr. Davis, he will conduct a thorough examination of your eyes and give you the opportunity to discuss your vision and lifestyle goals. He will then help you evaluate your IOL options and decide which is best for you.

If you need cataract surgery, are interested in undergoing refractive lens exchange, or want an advanced technology IOL to achieve clearer vision, we can help you learn more about your options.
